05-25 Parents Will Be Able to SUE Tech Firms for $25,000 If Their Children Become ‘Addicted’ to Social Media Under California Bill

California could soon hold social media companies responsible for harming children who have become addicted to their products.

Senators will soon vote on whether to permit parents to sue platforms such as Instagram and TikTok for up to $25,000 per violation under a bill that passed the state Assembly on Monday.

The bill defines ‘addiction’ as kids under 18 who are both harmed – either physically, mentally, emotionally, developmentally or materially – and who want to stop or reduce how much time they spend on social media but they can’t because they are preoccupied or obsessed with it.

05-24 Calling All Warriors! Join the #BeBraveZuck Movement.

In 2021, there were over 29.1 million reports of online child sexual abuse material (CSAM), 92% of which came from Meta and its platforms including Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. Meta has announced its plan to apply end-to-end encryption to all its platforms in 2023. Governments, law enforcement agencies, and child protection experts believe that Meta’s encryption plans will make a majority of cases of CSAM invisible. Leaving more children vulnerable while protecting child predators.

#BeBraveZuck Campaign was launched in April 2022, and builds on co-founder Sarah Cooper’s work with Meta shareholders and child safety organizations to hold Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accountable for their role in facilitating online child sexual abuse. The Brave Movement stands in firm solidarity with Sarah in all of her advocacy and campaigning efforts.

The Brave Movement is calling for a child rights and protection driven approach to creating a safe internet where children and adolescents are safe and secure, free from all forms of digital sexual violence. We call on all technology companies to immediately detect, report, and remove all online childhood sexual violence materials. Online childhood sexual violence is a universal, borderless crime which demands action in every country around the globe.

05-16 Etsy Has an Obligation to Stop Profiting from and Normalizing Exploitation. Take Action Today!

National Center on Sexual Exploitation
Among the handmade products sold on Etsy, you can also find exploitative ones—including pornographic merchandise and sex dolls resembling children and teens. Etsy is a global online marketplace known for “unique and creative goods” including handmade and vintage products. Unfortunately, it is also in the business of selling pornographic merchandise, image-based sexual abuse, misogynistic apparel, and sex dolls – including ones resembling children and young teens.

Customers complain about unwanted exposure to pornography and sexually explicit/suggestive content through recommendations, some likening this experience to “sexual harassment”. Yet Etsy’s mechanism for removing such content from search results is highly ineffective and often causes more of this content to surface. Etsy has an ethical obligation to stop profiting from and normalizing child sex abuse and exploitation.
