Among the handmade products sold on Etsy, you can also find exploitative ones—including pornographic merchandise and sex dolls resembling children and teens. Etsy is a global online marketplace known for “unique and creative goods” including handmade and vintage products. Unfortunately, it is also in the business of selling pornographic merchandise, image-based sexual abuse, misogynistic apparel, and sex dolls – including ones resembling children and young teens.
Customers complain about unwanted exposure to pornography and sexually explicit/suggestive content through recommendations, some likening this experience to “sexual harassment”. Yet Etsy’s mechanism for removing such content from search results is highly ineffective and often causes more of this content to surface. Etsy has an ethical obligation to stop profiting from and normalizing child sex abuse and exploitation.
