When Emma arrived at a slick, five-bedroom contemporary house in Central Los Angeles in June 2020, she thought the job orientation she was attending was for an assistant position at a new influencer-marketing firm — one that worked with some of the internet’s top creators.

But as Emma, a recent college grad, entered the 4,000-square-foot residence and sat down beside several other eager recruits, she noticed models parading through various rooms in bikinis and lingerie, posing for photographs.

Soon she realized she was entering another world entirely.

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón is expanding a program to drop criminal proceedings against juveniles charged with a range of felonies, according to a leaked memo.

The Restorative Enhanced Diversion for Youth (REDY) program was launched as a pilot basis last month, and Gascón is expanding it to cover a range of felony charges, according to the memo obtained by KTTV reporter Bill Melugin.

Under the expansion, youth would be eligible for ‘diversion’ after being charged with burglary, assault, vehicle theft, robbery, grand theft person, sexual battery, and arson, according to the memo.

Last week, Meta (the umbrella company formerly known as Facebook) opened up access to its virtual-reality social media platform, Horizon Worlds. Early descriptions of the platform make it seem fun and wholesome, drawing comparisons to Minecraft. In Horizon Worlds, up to 20 avatars can get together at a time to explore, hang out, and build within the virtual space.

But not everything has been warm and fuzzy. According to Meta, on November 26, a beta tester reported something deeply troubling: she had been groped by a stranger on Horizon Worlds. On December 1, Meta revealed that she’d posted her experience in the Horizon Worlds beta testing group on Facebook.

emotional milestones, learning healthy social skills, and dealing with
problems—is different and difficult. Many face added challenges
along the way, often beyond their control. There’s no map, and the
road is never straight.
But the challenges today’s generation of young people face are
unprecedented and uniquely hard to navigate. And the effect these
challenges have had on their mental health is devastating.
Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming
increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges—
in 2019, one in three high school students and half of female
students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, an
overall increase of 40% from 2009. We know that mental health is
shaped by many factors, from our genes and brain chemistry to our
relationships with family and friends, neighborhood conditions, and
larger social forces and policies. We also know that, too often, young
people are bombarded with messages through the media and popular
culture that erode their sense of self-worth—telling them they are
not good looking enough, popular enough, smart enough, or rich

12-14 Nassar Abuse Survivors Reach a $380 Million Settlement

Hundreds of female gymnasts who were sexually abused by Lawrence G. Nassar, the former team doctor of the national gymnastics team, have agreed to a $380 million settlement with U.S.A. Gymnastics and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, ending the latest dark chapter in one of the biggest child molestation cases in history.

The settlement, announced on Monday during U.S.A. Gymnastics’ bankruptcy proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana, is among the largest ever for a sexual abuse case. The funds would seek to compensate more than 500 abuse victims, including Olympic gold medalists like Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman. A small number of those victims were abused by their coaches or others in the sport.

12-13 Surgeon General Warns of Youth Mental Health Crisis

The United States surgeon general last Tuesday warned that young people are facing “devastating” mental health effects as a result of the challenges experienced by their generation, including the coronavirus pandemic.

The message came as part of a rare public advisory from the nation’s top physician, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, in a 53-page report noting that the pandemic intensified mental health issues that were already widespread by the spring of 2020.

The report cited significant increases in self-reports of depression and anxiety along with more emergency room visits for mental health issues. In the United States, emergency room visits for suicide attempts rose 51 percent for adolescent girls in early 2021 as compared to the same period in 2019. The figure rose 4 percent for boys.

Around 100 students from a New York middle school left class in the middle of the school day on Friday to protest what they say is ‘rampant sexual harassment from peers’. The young students, consisting mainly of teenage girls from Tompkins Square Middle School, headed to nearby Tompkins Square Park to air their grievances and make their voices heard in public. The group addressed their fellow classmates as they detailed how girls who attend the school are subjected to unwelcome comments and touching from boys who go there.
