January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. As we begin a new year, it is an important time to reflect on the resilience of trafficking survivors and recognize the efforts of those who work tirelessly to prevent and eliminate this inhumane and devastating form of abuse and exploitation. We’ve had many challenges in 2023. Slavery is escalating in the United States. Let us all enter into 2024 with the commitment that we will educate, prevent, speak up and out, have open and honest communication with our children and urge our 118th Congress to enact legislation to keep kids safe.

Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons, includes both forced labor and sex trafficking. It not only represents a threat to international peace and security but also undermines the rule of law, robs millions of their dignity and freedom, enriches transnational criminals and terrorists, and threatens public safety and national security everywhere. This crime affects all of us. Our children are vulnerable because of their online use. It is reported that 500,000 predators are online every day. One in five children will be approached online with sexual content – images and/or conversation. 40% will attempt to meet that stranger in real-time.

All of this must end. These are crimes against humanity. This is a bipartisan issue. Human trafficking belongs to no political party. It is time to end these atrocities.
