What’s the TAKE IT DOWN ACT?
The TAKE IT DOWN Act is a federal law signed by President Donald Trump on May 19, 2025, designed to combat online sexual exploitation, revenge porn and AI-generated deepfake pornography. It was strongly championed by First Lady Melania Trump and passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress.

Key provisions include:

Criminal penalties for knowingly publishing intimate images or videos of someone without their consent, including AI-generated deepfake images.

Mandatory removal requirements for social media platforms and websites. When a victim submits a valid request, covered platforms must remove the content and known copies within 48 hours.

• Protection applies to both real images and digitally altered or AI-generated “deepfake” images.

• Enforcement authority is given to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for platforms that fail to comply. FTC enforcement of the takedown provisions began in 2026.

For organizations like Lynn’s Warriors that focus on online exploitation and child safety, the law is significant because it gives victims a direct mechanism to force removal of exploitative content and creates federal consequences for those who create or distribute AI-generated sexual abuse material.

Supporters say it provides long-overdue protections for victims of online abuse.

In one sentence: The TAKE IT DOWN Act makes it a federal crime to share nonconsensual intimate images, including AI deepfakes, and requires online platforms to remove reported content within 48 hours.
