Our #1 child safety issue for 2024 is deepfake technology, which includes AI undressing (nudifying) websites and apps.

IMO, parents and governments are completely underestimating the risk of harm related to these technologies. Our US Congress is frighteningly ignorant on this issue.

Over break, it’s the one topic that has kept me up. Extremely concerned at what it could do to ANY of us.

Consider the mom who received a fake phone call from what sounded like her daughter, claiming she had been kidnapped. Her voice generated by deepfake AI.

Or the 30 teen girls in New Jersey, who had fake nudes made of them by male classmates. AI-generated from screenshots of social media photos.

So, late last week, we tested 43 of the top deepfake and nudify websites against some of the top parental control software tools.

Some performed well. A few failed to filter over 70% of the sites, which is a massive gap.

We’ve sent emails to all of them with our findings. If there were gaps, we’ve asked for confirmation when they’re fixed.

The number of deepfake apps being added to App Stores is outpacing controls. Some are rated age 4+.

What makes this issue so sinister is that there are few technical solutions. Even for families who have delayed.

But we’ve created a list of 14 relational and technical steps parents can take to help mitigate deepfake risks. We hope to share the complete list on Wednesday.
