Calling All New Yorkers! Vote to Protect Exploited Women
Just days away from a myriad of New York City elections, few are discussing a critical issue that has significant implications for our city: the sex trade. We need to hear whether our candidates want to shrink it and ensure that those attempting to exit it have meaningful access to services and strategies, thereby reducing harm to vulnerable and marginalized New Yorkers, or intend to let pimping, brothel-keeping and sex-buying expand in ways that will lead to exploitation, sex tourism and a predatory commercial sex industry throughout our five boroughs.
Excellent analysis by Rachel Foster.

Anti-sex trafficking advocate disappointed as Instagram reinstates Pornhub account hours after ban
MONTREAL — Pornhub’s Instagram account was removed from the platform on June 16 after a post was reported by a user for “nudity or sexual activity,” only to be reinstated the following morning.
The user was sent a notification from Instagram saying it was removing the Pornhub account because of a violation of “community guidelines.” The contents of the reported post are unconfirmed at this time.
News of the pornography giant’s deplatforming was shared via Twitter by anti-trafficking advocate Laila Mickelwait, founder of Traffickinghub, a group dedicated to exposing sexual exploitation on Pornhub.
Trafficking survivor shares story about how predators groomed her on social media
Millions of young children and teenagers are on social media, but it’s not all fun and games. It can be deadly serious if users are not careful, experts say.
Predators have mastered the art of disguising themselves and luring children into their web, activists say, and sites such as Instagram and TikTok are popular hunting grounds.
Sarah Cooper would know: She was groomed online and abducted by someone she thought she knew.
Lynn Shaw, a producer and public relations specialist, also realized how vulnerable children were during the height of the pandemic. After representing an author who wrote about the trauma of abuse, Shaw said she began researching human trafficking. She then established “Lynn’s Warriors” last fall to help parents stay vigilant.
“You have to be committed as that parent, as the trusted adult, to put these filters on your child’s devices. It takes a lot of work and a lot of energy,” Shaw said. “We’ve got to beat the predators, and they’re winning right now. It’s up to us to be a warrior for our own children.”
Shaw warns parents about the threats predators make.
“The number one threat we see once a child has sent these sexually explicit images is, ‘If you don’t do more, I’m going to tell your parents,’” she said. “And that is what causes children to go down this slippery slope.”

Montreal-based Pornhub, accused of trafficking humans and exploiting children in new lawsuit
In a new lawsuit, more than 30 women accuse Pornhub of profiting from videos posted without their consent The civil suit, filed Thursday, accuses the company of running a “criminal enterprise.” Pornhub markets itself as a mainstream site for adult content and says it yields 130 million users each day — more than Netflix or Amazon. But the women suing the company have accused it of exploiting them for profit, hosting and promoting graphic videos of rape, revenge porn and even videos that depict child sexual abuse.
