Apple plans to scan US iPhones for CSAM – Child Sexual Abuse Material

Later this year, Apple will roll out a technology that will allow the company to detect and report known child sexual abuse material to law enforcement in a way it says will preserve user privacy.

Apple told TechCrunch that the detection of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is one of several new features aimed at better protecting the children who use its services from online harm, including filters to block potentially sexually explicit photos sent and received through a child’s iMessage account. Another feature will intervene when a user tries to search for CSAM-related terms through Siri and Search.

Most cloud services — Dropbox, Google, and Microsoft to name a few — already scan user files for content that might violate their terms of service or be potentially illegal, like CSAM. But Apple has long resisted scanning users’ files in the cloud by giving users the option to encrypt their data before it ever reaches Apple’s iCloud servers.

Man Sentenced to 420 Months in Prison for Enticing and Sexually Abusing a Minor

A North Carolina man was sentenced today to 420 months, or 35 years, in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for enticing and sexually abusing a minor.

Emilio Moran, 39, of Jacksonville, pleaded guilty on Aug. 17, 2020, to sexual abuse of a minor and enticement of a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity. According to information presented at the sentencing proceeding, Moran enticed a minor to engage in a prolonged sexual relationship while he was accompanying the armed forces in Okinawa, Japan. Moran, a former U.S. Marine, used text messages and gifts to entice the minor into the illicit sexual relationship, and he took cellphone videos of some of the sexual abuse. Moran also encouraged the minor to destroy evidence in the case. The sexual relationship ended when it was reported to investigators with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and Acting U.S. Attorney G. Norman Acker III made the announcement.

July 30 Is World Day Against Trafficking In Persons #Take Action

This year’s theme puts victims of human trafficking at the center of the campaign and will highlight the importance of listening to and learning from survivors of human trafficking. The campaign portrays survivors as key actors in the fight against human trafficking and focusses on the crucial role they play in establishing effective measures to prevent this crime, identify and rescue victims and support them on their road to rehabilitation.

Many victims of human trafficking have experienced ignorance or misunderstanding in their attempts to get help. They have had traumatic post-rescue experiences during identification interviews and legal proceedings. Some have faced revictimization and punishment for crimes they were forced to commit by their traffickers. Others have been subjected to stigmatization or received inadequate support.

Learning from victims’ experiences and turning their suggestions into concrete actions will lead to a more victim-centered and effective approach in combating human trafficking.

Our Statement: Commercial Sexual Exploitation Across NYC Requires Concerted Effort

Lynn’s Warriors is a proud member of New Yorkers for the Equality Model and wants all of you to learn more and take action. New York State Senator Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Pamela Hunter are sponsoring the Sex Trade Survivors Justice and Equality Act (S6040/A7069) a key tool in preventing sex trafficking. The Act would decriminalize people engaged in prostitution and offer them access to comprehensive services, including exit strategies, while maintaining penalties against sex buyers, pimps and traffickers. The Act would also encourage public education about the harms of the sex trade, a multi-billion-dollar illegal enterprise that relies on sex, gender, racial, and economic inequalities and vulnerabilities. Here is our statement

New York City, Sex Trafficking Hub?

New York City is increasingly becoming a sex trafficking destination. Vulnerable people from around America are being shuttled here and sold for sex.

To Tina Frundt, it’s personal. The founder and CEO of Courtney’s House, a Washington-based anti-trafficking organization, Tina provides comprehensive services to underage victims. Tina has been sounding the alarms about the troubling trend of trafficking victims being transported from DC to the Big Apple. Tina’s observations are consistent with the bleak reality of NYC in 2021. From Hunts Point to East New York, men with disposable income are purchasing women, girls and LGBTQ+ youth for sex on the city streets with complete impunity.
